Fermo, the new provincial capitol, is about 25 minutes away. Its web of streets is lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings. At the top a Romanesque Gothic cathedral. The town also has a first century underground complex of cisterns, the Piscina Epuratoria Romana, akin to a flooded cathedral, to supply the Roman Imperial fleet with fresh water. Falerone itself lies in the Tenna Valley between the Sibillini National Park and the sandy beaches of the Adriatic coastline. The Sibillini mountains are snow capped for much of the year (ski in winter, hike in summer) and are the stunning backdrop for the natural beauty of this area. In Falerone you can find the Regional Archaeological Park that protects the remains of Falerio Picenus, established by the Romans in 29 BC. Most of the finest archaeological treasures are in the Vatican museums but several villas and baths as well as a well-restored amphitheatre are worth a visit. GO BACK |
